Use the email log search
In your Google Admin console, found by browsing to ‘admin.google.com’ or by clicking on the app launcher and scrolling to find Admin while logged in as an Administrator account
- Go to Reports, then on the left side of the screen, under the Audit section, browse to Email Log Search (Requires having the Email log search administrator privilege.)
- The main use case for using email log search would be to track an email’s path and figure out where the issue lies in the transmission of the message.
- Select a date range using the drop-down list or specify a range using the calendar. The range is limited to the last 30 days
Note: When searching for an email sent to a group email address it is best to search by message ID. We do not recommend searching using a group email address as the recipient because the results will not list delivery to individual group members.
- For the Sender IP or Recipient IP make sure to enter the entire IP address or the request will fail.
- In the subject field, enter an email subject line, or part of a subject line. This is case sensitive.
- The next field is Message ID, and I will show you where to find that!
- From the Gmail inbox, go into the message that you want the message ID for.
- On the right side at the top, you will see the three vertical dots, and then we want to ‘Show original’
- Then the message ID will be in green font as the first entry on the page. We will need the entire string of that text to use in the email log search.
- Now, back to our email log search.
- We are going to use that message ID we just got from that email and put it in the Message ID field.
- Click Search. You should see search results within a minute or two (although in some cases the wait may be up to an hour).
- Click a subject (or message ID) to see message details, including delivery path and status.
- Search results are limited to 1000 entries, so make sure to narrow your search as much as possible
We can also download the search results to Google Sheets or a CSV file. To download your search results click the download arrow at the top of the page.
- The CSV file (or spreadsheet) shows the delivery steps for each message in your search results. So expect your CSV file or spreadsheet to have many more lines of data than the actual number of search results.
